I Am Somebody

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Mr. Fluck Mill and I listened to the Martin Luther King Day program live from the Buskirk-Chumley on WFHB on Monday evening. It was wonderful to sit and listen to the program…I thought I’d share Reverend Jesse Jackson’s poem here. When he first began to deliver his message he came out saying, “I Am Somebody,” and began a call and response with the audience.

I Am
Somebody
I Am
Somebody
I May Be Poor
But I Am Somebody
I May Be Young
But I Am Somebody
I May Be Young
But I Am
Somebody
I May Be On Welfare
But I Am
Somebody
I May Be Small
But I Am
Somebody
I May Make A Mistake
But I Am
Somebody
My Clothes Are Different
My Face Is Different
My Hair Is Different
But I Am
Somebody
I Am Black
Brown
White
I Speak A Different Language
But I Must Be Respected
Protected
Never Rejected
I Am
God’s Child
I Am Somebody

In other news, the terrible loss of the seat held by Sen. Teddy Kennedy to the other side…is hard to comprehend. I thought I had a lot of commentary but the disappointment is paralyzing.

Results and Analysis from the NYTimes:

Results from each township in the Democrats stunning loss in the Massachusetts special election to fill the Senate seat once held by Edward M. Kennedy. Many expected Martha Coakley, the Democratic candidate, to win easily, but over the past month, Scott Brown, the Republican candidate, galvanized the state’s independent voters, seizing on dissatisfaction with the economy, taxes and governmental spending.
