Finn’s first game, thanks Patsy Mink!

I was a horrible…no, make that HORRIBLE, ahtlete as a kid. I couldn’t play team sports to save my life. Had awful hand-eye coordination for anything requiring that a ball be hit by something. Badminton? Forget it. Basketball? OMG, I sucked! Soccer? I thoroughly enjoyed it until I kicked the ball– for the other team. Volleyball? The worst…it terrified me, especially after jamming my fingers so hard I saw stars. And this doesn’t even mention the required square dancing in my phys ed class that also required us to wear a once piece flame orange, pinstriped gym suit…

So I’ve been a little anxious about how I’ll teach Finn about sports. I’ll focus on hiking, biking, swimming, nature outings, etc…

But I had so much fun recently when I took Finn to his first IU sporting event: IU Women’s Basketball!! Hooray!

What a great deal too! No hassle parking, super friendly greeters, and a fantastically exciting game. Finn was thrilled from the get go. He clapped as we went to our seats. He stood up in the bleachers along with friends with children from Rogers-Binford Elementary. He howled along with the folks when points were scored. He even made it onto the big screen for a second– which was probably more a thrill for me to see that kind of view of the tot…

Supporting women athletes is something I hope to do more. And I look forward to instilling in Finn that women need his support too!

Funny, Mr. Fluck Mill and I are waiting today for Smithville telephone company who promised to come over today— check out the company’s support of IU Women’s Basketball: Smithville Makes Largest Capital Contribution to IU Women’s Basketball in History!

You may already know that Title IX Amendment of the Higher Education Act helps collegiate women athletes…It’s nice to think about the honorable Patsy Mink when reminded of this important legislation she authored while serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. She was also the first female minority member elected to serve in Congress.

She was born December 6th, 1927 (d. Sep. 28, 2002). It is also nice to reflect on the recent date of her birthday, thinking of all she contributed to democracy through her public service.
