APHM! Fortune Cookie Chronicles

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Last Friday I heard Beverly Calender-Anderson read this Proclamation at a kickoff luncheon on campus at Indiana University:

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the fabric and foundation of America is enriched by the diverse cultural palette and unique traditions of individuals and groups who have helped shape our nation; and

WHEREAS, encompassing many histories, languages and cultures while sharing common American experiences, Asian Pacific Americans have achieved exceptional success in all aspects of society including business, politics, education, entertainment, community service, media, arts and sciences; and

WHEREAS, each year the month of May is celebrated as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month to pay tribute to the innumerable contributions and cultural heritage of Asian Pacific Americans; and

WHEREAS, in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, a variety of local celebrations will be held featuring cultural, artistic and educational activities; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting that Bloomington acknowledges and celebrates the courage, sacrifice and determination of Asian Pacific Americans. Their beautiful traditions and customs have forever enhanced our culture, and their ongoing contributions have significantly added to the greatness of this country.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mark Kruzan, Mayor of Bloomington, do hereby proclaim May 2009, as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in Bloomington, Indiana.

Cool! Here’s a nice press release detailing the start to this year’s Indiana University based celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month: IU celebration of diverse Asian cultures, history and peoples begins Friday

One of the key events coming up is the visit of writer Jennifer 8. Lee, author of The Fortune Cookie Chronicles. I like this teaser on her website:

“The book is a tribute to immigrants and to America. If our benchmark for Americanness is apple pie, ask yourself, how often do you eat apple pie? Now how often do you eat Chinese food?”

And she blogs too: The Fortune Cookie Chronicles

Hmmm. Suddenly I’m craving steamed dumplings…
