Cybersecurity, Sustainability, Meet the Parents
Thursday, November 29th, 2007My folks are visiting…they arrived yesterday.
In the meantime my entry from a few days ago titled (and about) “Odyssey” has several comments that are thought-provoking. Two commenters, Kevin & Jason, raise some issues about cyber security, cost-effectiveness, the annoyance and dismay over what seems to them like a lack of transparency towards implementation of Odyssey… for me, their hinting at cyber security issues are a topmost matter they touch upon— nothing to sniff at in this day and age of internet access.
I’m not qualified to say that those particular fears are warranted—but I know enough to say that perceptions about the safety of a system that is designed outside Indiana (eventually intended for statewide use and access while first being tested in Monroe County,) are perceptions of constituents to respect and find clear answers for.
People have their reasons, perfectly sound reasons, for feeling more comfortable—and preferring all things locally-owned, produced, etc. These values can apply to computer applications just as easily as they do for opting to eat a local, homegrown tomato…
On another note, I’ve been perusing the Indiana University Task Force on Sustainability report, and other related links, online. However you feel about Indiana University’s role regarding local sustainability issues, it looks as though the academic research has produced a strong sense of purpose in this first report—one that could positively influence and reach out to the city and county.
The County held a discussion (scheduled yesterday morning,) hosted by the County Commissioners (Republican County Commissioner Joyce Poling apparently appears to be a proactive point person on this matter…) about a potential Fuel Conservation Resolution. Step it Up organizer Stephanie Kimball helped facilitate the launch to the discussion. I look forward to hearing more about it.
If you see me around town with two sprightly people, one Korean-American, another conspicuously Finnish-American looking…well, “Meet the Parents!”
